How Underestimated are Diabetes in the USA ?

When you think of deadly illnesses, diabete is most likely not what comes to mind.  Don’t feel bad, you are not the only one who thinks that heart disease and cancer the top contenders.  Most people do not look at diabete as a threat as there is medication for it.  It is sad to see that most people do not understand what diabetes is all about.  You cannot just take it for granted that the medicine is going to fix it all.

Diabete is an illness that many have to deal with.  This is when your body cannot process sugar as it should and this is usually due to an insulin problem.  Either you do not have enough insulin or your body doesn’t know how to use it.  It can affect your entire body with such problems as sleep, how you function sexually, it can affect your mental health as well as your kidneys and it an even triple your chances for such things as stoke and heart attacks.  It is also the main reason why people have amputations done.  If it is not managed and taken care of the right way, it can be devastating and even deadly for many.

This is a widely misunderstood and underestimated illness as many Americans overlook it.  This year alone, the results are shocking on how many people have diabetes.  8% of the USA population is affected and it is also shocking to see that about 25% of people that are over 60 have diabetes and that is just the ones that have been diagnosed.  What about the percentage of those who have it and don’t know?

Thankfully, there are treatment options once you know you have it or are at risk for getting it.  There are new medications popping up all the time that will allow you to monitor diabetes.  This has improved the quality of care dramatically but it still needs to be diagnosed in order for these things to help.  It is said that the leading cause of type 2 diabetes is being obese.  It is also known that it becomes more of an issue when you get older.  So it should go without saying that you should watch your weight, get plenty of exercise and eat a healthy diet.

If you are diagnosed early on, you can expect to live a completely normal life if you monitor your diabetes.  Unfortunately, many people do not take care of themselves as they should and with the ever-rising cost of medical insurance, people let their health slide due to not being able to afford any extra medical bills.  People need to be more careful where their health is concerned.  This is something that should not be pushed to the side.  What good will you be, if you are not around?  People need to take diabetes much more seriously and education is the best way to do that.  If this is left to be underestimated, more and more people can suffer with devastating results from having diabetes with no treatment.
